Dionysis Teboneras submitted his resignation as a member of SYRIZA, thus leaving the party for good, heading towards the new party formation of Alexis Tsipras.
Teboneras had long ago resigned from SYRIZA’s organs, while in his statements this morning he noted the party has come full circle in its historical cycle and they must support the former prime minister without conditions.
In fact, he is expected to be among the persons who will sign the founding declaration of Tsipras’ party.
His entire resignation letter:
We agree with the political initiative of Alexis Tsipras and we are making a political choice that is compatible with our values and principles, not because we are ceding them, but because we believe we can defend them better. And together with the social strata we want to represent…
The world does not change…
It has changed…
And we are struggling to understand it. Not to adapt and survive, for goodness sake.
The world will move on without and after us.
But, to continue to serve ideas, values and principles.
They are the same ideas that have always been the “Sixth of our lives.”
Social justice, solidarity, equality, equality, democracy… Socialism.
Are we getting there?
Maybe not…
But “it’s worth it, man, to exist for a dream and let its fire burn you out”…
In 2023, a historic cycle for SYRIZA has come full circle.
Why?
Because the crucial conclusions were not drawn at the right time.
Does this invalidate our course and path on this journey?
In no way…
Had it not been for SYRIZA, to manage a bankruptcy that others bequeathed, the blackness that swept Europe over the past decade would have involved the country in huge, national adventures.
But we both suffered and learned.
In 2026 the needs, anxieties, problems and divisive intersections are different.
After 2023 we submitted a text on the causes of the electoral defeat and the course of SYRIZA.
We called for a conference of self-criticism and perspective preceded by the election of the President of SYRIZA.
In 2024 we submitted a proposal for cooperation between the left and progressive forces on the basis of a programmatic agreement. We took initiatives of synthesis in the “ALFA theatre”.
In 2025 we resigned from any position of responsibility in SYRIZA, remaining simply party members committed to the value and ideological framework expressed by SYRIZA and the “ruling Left”.
We were not listened to, we were not convinced and we had to take responsibility.
We are now in 2026 and the agony is growing, as are the problems of the people.
For the first time in the post-independence era, there is a danger that the “right” and its extreme neoliberal policies will continue for 12 consecutive years, until 2031!
The existing progressive parties, while they had space and time at their disposal, have not managed to fill the gap in political terms and give the prospect of alternative governability.
They failed to convince that they have an ideological and political platform to govern the country and a political plan for the future.
What is the political stakes now for the progressive space?
One and only one…
To emerge a collective political subject that aims at left and progressive governance.
Can any of the existing entities fulfill this?
Citizens in 70% of all polls answer “no”. In the European elections they abstained from the ballot box at 58%.
Will cooperation or composition help?
Composition has failed, however much we have sought it. History will take the blame.
Now is the time for political transcendence.
What constitutes political transgression today in realistic terms?
The emergence of a new meeting place for left and progressive citizens with a discussion from scratch about an “other” governing Left of the modern era.
Who can promote it?
A collective political subject with principles, positions, a plan, a program, with the participation of the popular factor and a strong leadership.
Can Alexis Tsipras express it?
Persons are not judged as “personalities” in politics, however charismatic they may be, but as political “symbols” that embody and express all of the above.
Alexis Tsipras has successfully done so in the past. We need to support him to repeat it again, to keep this great “Case” alive.
To build “SYRIZA No 2”?
No…
History usually, repeats itself only as a farce.
New needs, new tasks…
One basic thing:
Give the social opposition political expression and make it a government “by society, with society, for society.”
Do we have all the answers?
No, but we are full of questions and we must look away from the certainties of the past.
Is it worth the risk?
C. Marx writes: “Nothing can have value if it has no utility.”
Our duty, then, is to become socially useful.
We are making a political choice to “bring the world” back together in our time, for a new unity that touches the needs of today.
We put yesterday’s contradictions behind us, but without hiding the problems.
“By walking we make the road.”
We join with the political initiative of Alexis Tsipras and make a political choice that is compatible with our values and principles, not because we cede them, but because we appreciate that we can defend them better. And together with the social strata we want to represent…
Those “from below”!
The destination, after all, is always the same and “we never asked for a share”.
The journey does not stop.

PS: I am sure that SYRIZA will make the right decision in the coming days and will support politically the project of Alexis Tsipras without conditions and preconditions, responding to the need for a new unity. One cycle closes and a new one opens for the whole left and progressive world.
