Repairs and improvements to over two hundred schools across Greece are included in the second phase of the Marietta Giannakou School Building Renovation Programme.
The signing of the second phase of the programme is expected to be announced and signed on Thursday, 7 May, at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport by the relevant ministers, the representatives of the four donor Banks (Alpha Bank, Eurobank, National Bank and Piraeus) and “Building Infrastructures S.A.”
According to reports, more than 220 schools across the country will be renovated next summer through the “Marietta Giannakou” programme, while extensive interventions in more than 430 schools have already been implemented in 2025.
These are interventions that will significantly change for the better the teaching and working environment of thousands of students.
The “Marietta Giannakou” programme was launched on the initiative of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, with the aim of interventions in more than 2500 school units.
The programme is funded with a significant amount of money from the Hellenic Banking Association, as the trustee of the four donor Banks (Alpha Bank, Eurobank, National Bank and Piraeus).
The total budget of the programme as planned is EUR 650 million. EUR 250 million is allocated from the Public Investment Programme for the interventions in schools and the remaining EUR 400 million is a contribution from the four systemic banks (EUR 100 million was given in the first phase of the programme and the remaining EUR 300 million will be provided through additional donations over three years).
Under the first phase of the programme, which was completed and financed, through donation, with 100 million euros from the above four systemic banks, there were interventions in 431 school units in 245 municipalities and in 13 regions of the country.

The interventions implemented include, among others:
Renovation of sanitary facilities & creation of accessible W.C. for disabled people,
Repairs of ramps for the disabled,
Interior and exterior painting,
Courtyard improvements, with basketball and volleyball courts, and playgrounds in kindergartens.
Priority based on program design was given to :
Special schools,
Units in border, island and frontier areas and
Schools in areas affected by natural disasters.
