“The family of New Democracy bids farewell with emotion and gratitude to one of the members who formed its first Parliamentary Group in 1974, a great fighter of the Party, George Souflias,” reads a statement by the Press Office of New Democracy on the loss of George Souflias.

“He was born in 1941 in Agia Triada Farsala and studied Civil Engineering at the Polytechnic School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

Since 1967 he worked as a civil engineer in Larissa, maintaining a design and construction office.

After the 1974 elections, he was continuously re-elected as a Member of Parliament of Larissa until the 1996 elections, while in the 2004, 2007 and 2009 elections he was elected Member of State.

He served as Deputy Minister of Interior in the governments of Konstantinos Karamanlis and Deputy Minister of Coordination in the government of Georgios Rallis.

He became Minister of National Economy in the government of Tzannis Tzannetakis (1989) and Minister of Finance in the ecumenical government of Xenophon Zolotas (1989-1990).

In the governments of Constantine Mitsotakis (1990-1993), he served successively as Minister of National Economy and Minister of National Education and Religious Affairs.

He was also Minister of Environment, Spatial Planning and Public Works in both governments of Kostas Karamanlis (2004-2009).

Giorgos Souflias’ multifaceted career was characterised by ethics, dignity, efficiency, passion and dedication to duty, earning the respect and appreciation of the entire political world.

The news of his death fills us with sadness, especially those of our executives who were lucky enough to know him and work with him.
