Papageorgiou Hospital is planning to establish a Proton Therapy Center, aiming to provide cancer patients with treatments using a cutting-edgeradiotherapy method, which is currently not available in Greece but only at specialized centers abroad. As announced during the annual report for 2025, this initiative constitutes the hospital’s future strategic goal. The new building that will house the Proton Therapy Center will be located in close proximity to the existing Radiotherapy Department.
Investments, infrastructure, and technological upgrades in 2025
During the presentation, the chairman of the hospital’s Board of Directors, Michalis Karaviotis, stated that as part of the interventions and investments implemented in 2025, emphasis was placed on modernization, oncology care, and technological upgrades. As shown by the financial report, the hospital received €9.5 million in funding from the “Central Macedonia 2021–2027” Operational Program, while digital transformation projects totaling €800,000 were also implemented, with the aim of improving services provided to patients and staff.
He also noted that particular emphasis was placed on oncology care, with the completion of the new Short-Stay Unit of the Department of Medical Oncology at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, which features 36 chemotherapy stations, modern waiting areas, and support facilities, thereby enhancing patient care capabilities. At the same time, he noted that improvements were made to the hospital’s surrounding area to enhance fire safety, improve functionality, and increase parking spaces, thereby contributing to the improvement of daily operations. In the area of innovation and research, there was a further increase in participation in research programs and collaborations with academic institutions, while plans were made to develop roboticrobotic surgery in key specialties.
The Proton Therapy Center
Regarding the design of the first Proton Therapy Center in Greece, it was emphasized that this is a landmark initiative that aims to substantially expand radiation therapy services and offer new hope to cancer patients, who until now have had to seek treatment at specialized centers abroad. The method is considered one of the most advanced in radiation therapy, as it targets the tumor with greater precision and minimizes damage to healthy tissues and vital organs. The new building will be located in direct proximity to the existing RadiotherapyDepartment, ensuring optimal integration of hospital operations.
