The extension of the Thessaloniki Metro to Kalamaria within the next quarter was announced by Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Christos Dimas, noting that five more stations will soon be opened to traffic.

Talking to Action24, the minister stressed that the operation of the metro has already contributed substantially to reducing the traffic problem in Thessaloniki, noting that, according to data from the Institute of Transport of the Ministry of Transport, traffic in the city centre has been reduced by 15%.

He also described Thessaloniki’s metro as one of the most modern in Europe, placing particular emphasis on the promotion of cultural heritage through the stations. As he noted, Venizelos station is a declared archaeological site, while the other stations function as “museums” that showcase the city’s history.

Dimas estimated that the operation of the new stations up to Kalamaria will significantly increase the number of passengers and further reduce the volume of vehicles on the city’s roads.

He also referred to the flyover project in Thessaloniki, noting that its construction has exceeded 50% of the physical scope and is proceeding at an intensive pace.

He said the project has the support of the local community and is expected to double the capacity to serve vehicles, from 5.000 to 10,000, contributing substantially to improving traffic flow.
