Seventy-seven years after his first speech in 1999 at the Plenary Session of the Parliament, His Beatitude, Archbishop of Constantinople, New Rome, and Ecumenical Patriarch, Mr.Bartholomew, is addressing a Special Session of the Plenary of the Parliament today, at the invitation of the Speaker of the Greek Parliament, Nikitas Kaklamanis.

The historic meeting is taking place in the presence of the President of the Republic, Constantine Tasoulas.

In a difficult international context, due to the crisis in the Middle East and the ongoing war in Ukraine, the Ecumenical Patriarch’s speech takes on even greater significance.

Immediately after his address, the President of the Parliament will award the Ecumenical Patriarch the Gold Medal of the Hellenic Parliament, while after the end of the Special Session of the Plenary Session of the Parliament he will host a banquet in his honour.

His Holiness completes this year 35 years of Patriarchal service and 65 years of priestly mission.

On Thursday, May 7, at 17:30, the Speaker of the Parliament, Nikitas Kaklamanis, will address the event entitled “Timelessness and Universality: The Patriarchate of Constantinople in the Modern World”, which will be held in honour of the Ecumenical Patriarch, Mr. Bartholomew, at the Pallas Theatre, co-organized by the volunteer group “Roma Acts”.
