By decision of the Deputy Minister of National Economy and Finance Nikos Papathanasis, the project entitled “Socioeconomic Transition of Western Macedonia – Phase 2”, with a total budget of 110 million euros, was included in the co-financed part of the Development Programme of Public Investment (DIP) of the region of Western Macedonia.
This includes 18 individual projects (public infrastructure) in critical sectors such as education, health and social care, transport, energy saving, with a significant developmental footprint for the whole region.
The decision activates the implementation process of the projects approved for Western Macedonia under Pillar III of the European Mechanism for the Fair Transition regions. The financing of these projects combines loans from the European Investment Bank (EIB) with grants from the EU budget and national resources.
This project addresses identified needs of the region and is another practical example of supporting the transition of Western Macedonia to a new and more modern development model.

The 18 projects included are:
1. Road connection ZEP- University of West Macedonia. Macedonia with a level junction on the Kozani – Ioannina highway.

2. Improvement of the road section “Kozani – Airport” of the Kozani – Larissa National Road (EO3).
3. Improvement of the provincial road axis “Tochiou junction – Vitsi ski resort – boundary of the south of Florina”.
4. Improvement of the road section from Polykeraso to the monastery of Ag. Anargyroi Melissotopou.

5. Upgrading the lighting of existing junctions in the Prefecture of Kastoria.
6. Improvement of the road section from Kaisaria to Aiani with the construction of a bridge at the “Chandakas” location.
7. Redevelopment of the road to workers’ houses (Kardia settlement).
8. Redevelopment of public lands of the central axis of Perdika.
9. Improvement of the Ptolemaida-Asvestopetra road.
10. Street lighting of the municipal road network in the district of Nestori to improve road safety and reduce operating costs.
11. Construction of a new 10.6 km long provincial road from Akrini to Kozani, in the area of the South Field mine of Ptolemaida, to serve the residents of the settlement of Akrini.

12. Improvement of the Nisi-Karpero road (Ventzia-Hasia).
13. Police Cadet Department of the Police School of Kastoria.
14. Water Supply – Sewerage and Stormwater of the municipality of Velventos.
15. Improvement of a section of the Kozani-Aiani provincial road (Kozani – Lefkovrisi section).
16. Structural reinforcement of the buildings of the old wing and outpatient clinics and upgrading of the building infrastructure of the General Hospital of Kozani.
17. Improvement and modernization of infrastructure and facilities at the General Hospital of Kastoria.
