Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis took to the podium of the plenary session of the House of Representatives for his speech in the pre-agenda debate on the rule of law, which PASOK had requested.

The debate in Parliament is taking place in the shadow of the difficult health adventure of Deputy Prime Minister George Mylonakis, who is being treated in the intensive care unit of the Evangelismos hospital.

It is noted that yesterday information indicated that there were thoughts of postponing the debate in Parliament, but the issue was never officially raised and the parliamentary procedure will be held as normal today at 11:00.

The Prime Minister’s speech in Parliament

With a reference and wishes for the recovery of George Mylonakis, who, he said, is going through a long health adventure, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis began his address to the plenary session of the House of Representatives in the pre-agenda debate, in accordance with Rule 143 of the Rules of Procedure of the House, “on the state of the rule of law, the institutions and the functioning of Parliament in Greece”. He thanked the leader of the opposition party for offering to postpone today’s debate and said he was responding to his request for this debate but said he regretted both the content and the context in which it was being held. “Because as the international horizon darkens the present, you choose to use this important tool at your disposal, a pre-dawn debate, to rehash the past,” the Prime Minister said.

You bring up causes of division and at a time when our country needs certainty and perspective

He stressed that at a time when unity is called for, “you are dragging up causes for division and at times when our country needs certainty and perspective, I think you are stuck with slogans of yesterday. Today we should not be talking about issues of the rule of law – without in any way underestimating the importance of today’s debate. We should be discussing what is happening in Iran, in the Middle East, in Lebanon. We should be discussing Greece’s defence presence in Cyprus. We should primarily be discussing the significant and inescapable economic consequences of the crisis on the Greek economy and how they can be countered or at least mitigated.
