The “historically strong ties of friendship and cooperation” between Greece and the United Kingdom were referred to by the Speaker of Parliament Nikitas Kaklamanis, who met with UK Ambassador Matthew James Lodge.

The Speaker of the Parliament welcomed Ambassador Lodz to the Greek Parliament, noting that “our countries are linked by strong historical ties of friendship and cooperation which will be strengthened during his tenure”, particularly through the exchange of visits by MPs and Chairs of Parliamentary Committees.

Kaklamanis stressed the importance of the growing Greek community in the United Kingdom, which can play a role in strengthening cooperation between the two countries, noting that Greece has been, and continues to be, a particularly popular tourist destination for British visitors of all ages.

For his part, the UK Ambassador, who is a lover of the Greek language and culture, stressed that in the difficult and turbulent times we live in, peace and conflict resolution are everyone’s priority. “Dialogue must prevail and any further escalation must be avoided,” he said.

House Speaker N. Kaklamanis invited his British counterpart for an official visit to Athens next autumn, the details of which will be settled through diplomatic channels.

The meeting was also attended by the Head of the Embassy’s Political Department Christos Psaltis and the President’s diplomatic adviser, Konstantinos Economides, Ambassador (retired).
