The attitude of PASOK and the overwhelming majority of the minor opposition, who voted against article 51 of the bill “Social Climate Fund, Modernization Fund and other provisions”, was criticized by the Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Food, Makarios Lazaridis.
The article in question provides, among other things, for emergency measures to tackle smallpox, foot-and-mouth disease and financial aid for affected livestock farmers on Lesvos.
“The attitude of the opposition parties towards the amendment we tabled on the emergency measures against foot-and-mouth disease and on the support of farmers who are being tested is really surprising.””At such a critical moment, PASOK and the other minority parties chose to say “no”. No to measures, no to aid, no to responsibility,” Lazaridis said in a statement, adding that “When circumstances demand seriousness, some choose petty partisanship and sterile denial.”
The Deputy Minister’s entire statement:
“The attitude of the opposition parties towards the amendment we tabled on the emergency measures against foot-and-mouth disease and on the support of the farmers who are suffering is really surprising.
At such a crucial moment, PASOK and the other minority parties chose to say “no”. No to measures, no to aid, no to responsibility.
So what exactly did they vote against? The protection of production? Support for rural people? The measures to curb animal diseases? When circumstances call for seriousness, some people choose petty partisanship and sterile denial.
The Government will continue with plan and determination to stand by farmers and the region, taking all necessary measures to protect production and public health, with or without their consent.
