Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis participated today in a teleconference on the protection of minors on the internet and the adoption of a pan-European age limit for access to social media. The teleconference was convened at the initiative of French President Emmanuel Macron.
According to a government statement, during the teleconference, in which 14 EU member states were represented and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen took part, the Prime Minister informed about Greece’s decision to soon legislate to ban access to social media by minors under 15 years of age, a measure that will come into force on 1 January 2027.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis stressed the need for a European age verification mechanism, as well as a European digital age of majority, so that national initiatives are fully harmonised with EU legislation.
