Direct air service between Vienna and Mytilene will begin on 15 June 2026, following actions by the Austrian EOT Authority, according to an announcement, as part of the agency’s strategy to include new and less well-known Greek destinations in the airline schedules.
On the occasion of the launch of the new routes, which will last until the end of September, this EOT service organised a press trip to Lesvos from 26 to 30 April 2026, in cooperation with the North Aegean Region, Austrian Airlines and local tourism operators and entrepreneurs.
The press trip was attended by journalists from the Austrian media Kronen Zeitung, one of the largest newspapers in Europe, Kurier, Salzburger Nachrichten, MauroMittendrin ANSA, The Viennese Girl, TIP and TAI, who were accompanied by the head of the Austrian National Tourism Organisation, Stavroula Skaltsi, the head of the same department, Yannis Rafalias, and Michaela Gruber Rafalias from Austrian Airlines.
During their stay on the island, the Austrian journalists met with the Regional Governor of the North Aegean, Kostas Moutzouris, and officials of the Region, toured the town of Mytilene and visited the traditional villages of Molyvos, Petra, Eressos, Kalloni, Plomari and Agiassos, as well as the monasteries of Taxiarchis and Panagia Glikofilousa.
At the same time, they had the opportunity to get to know the area of the Kalloni wetland, which attracts ornithologists from all over the world and is part of the NATURA 2000 programme, to take a guided tour of the Petrified Forest Park of Lesvos, which is included in the UNESCO World Geoparks Network, and the Natural History Museum in Sigri, take a sea tour along the island’s coastline and taste unique flavours from its traditional gastronomy.
Note that Austria is the only country that now has direct connections to 22 Greek destinations (Athens, Thessaloniki/Halkidiki, Kavala, Skiathos, Skyros, Preveza, Corfu, Kefalonia, Zakynthos, Zakynthos, Araxos, Kalamata, Rhodes, Kos, Karpathos, Limnos, Paros, Mykonos, Santorini, Heraklion, Chania, Samos and Lesvos), while 2025 was a milestone year for inbound tourism from this market, as more than 900 tourists visited Greece.000 Austrians.
