DISY President Anita Demetriou was today re-elected Speaker of the Cyprus House of Representatives in the second round of voting. Demetriou was elected for a second consecutive term with the 17 votes of DISY, 8 of DIKO and 4 of Direct Democracy.
Her running mate, AKEL Secretary General Stefanos Stefanou, received 19 votes, 17 from AKEL and 4 from Alma. ELAM MPs abstained in this round.
Earlier, in the first round of voting, Demetriou secured 21 votes from DISY and Immediate Democracy (17 from DISY and 4 from Immediate Democracy), while Stefanou received 19 votes, 15 from AKEL and four from MPs of the ‘Alma-Citizens for Cyprus’ movement.
DIKO President Nicolas Papadopoulos, who received his party’s 8 votes, and ELAM President Christos Christou, who also received 8 votes from his party, did not qualify for the second round.
The session began at around 4 p.m., chaired by senior MP Zacharias Koulias, with the 56 MPs and representatives of religious groups assured.
