Significant changes in the use of electric skates were announced by the Minister of Civil Protection, Michael Chrysochoidis, speaking to SKAI, in response to recent serious accidents that have caused intense concern.

The Minister said that the possibility of completely banning the use of electric skates by people under the age of 18 is under consideration, stressing that the aim is to ensure the safe movement of everyone on the roads and pavements.

As he explained, skates are an environmentally friendly means of transport, but stricter rules are needed to reduce accidents and danger.

Among the measures being considered is compulsory insurance, so that in the event of a collision or injury, people can be compensated.

At the same time, he referred to the serious problem of disorderly parking, noting that many scooters are abandoned on pavements and public spaces, creating difficulties for pedestrians.

The minister also stressed that the traffic police are increasing checks, while the installation of speed limiters on scooters is being considered to reduce the risks of causing accidents.

Finally, he pointed out that municipalities should actively contribute to regulating the traffic and parking of skates, even by limiting the available permits where necessary.
