Several MPs under scrutiny in the OPEKEPE case have been upset by a serious error allegedly made in the European Public Prosecutor’s Office documents.
More specifically, the MPs being scrutinised in the OPECEP case received summonses to explain themselves via a memo on 22 May, but some of them said they faced felony charges, although most are only being scrutinised for a misdemeanour.
In fact, on the afternoon of Wednesday 06.05.2026, the European Public Prosecutor’s Office sent new corrected summonses to the MPs.
For its part, the European Public Prosecutor’s Office cited… a typographical error by an employee in the copy-paste and thus some of the MPs received a summons for a felony, which they say does not affect the validity of the proceedings.
That doesn’t change the fact that on May 22, the MPs will have to give an unofficial explanation.
According to the evidence in the case, only two political figures, Kostas Ach. Karamanlis and Katerina Papakosta, are being investigated for a felony because the amounts involved in the case exceed 120,000 euros. The other nine New Democracy MPs are being investigated for lesser offences.
The error in the summonses has caused a backlash, with several MPs and their lawyers calling for immediate clarification from the European Public Prosecutor’s Office. It has been announced that a new, corrected summons with the correct details and charges is expected to be sent.
MEPs briefed on the matter spoke of sloppiness in the process, even expressing concerns about the way the case file has been set up overall.
At the same time, non-political figures included in the second OPEKEPE case, as well as in the evidence and conversations that have been made public recently, have also received calls for explanations.
