A total of 74 arrests have been made since the beginning of the year through June 8 in the spontaneous fire cases, according to Fire Department data.

Among those arrested is a 70-year-old foreigner, who was arrested today by officers of the Arson Crime Prevention Directorate in cooperation with the Investigation Department of the Corinth Fire Department. The man allegedly caused the fire that broke out in Perachora, Corinthia, during cleaning and vegetation cutting operations, without taking the necessary fire protection measures. An administrative fine of 5,821.87 euros was imposed against him.

As official figures show, the vast majority of arrests relate to incidents attributed to negligence. Specifically, 68 cases, 91.89%, are linked to negligent actions, while the remaining 6, accounting for 8.11%, involve cases of arson with intent.

At the same time, during the same period, a total of 404 administrative fines have been recorded, with the total amount of penalties amounting to 391,093.93 euros.

The Fire Department notes that the controls by the investigative services continue with undiminished intensity, while where violations of the applicable legislation are found, the prescribed administrative and criminal sanctions are immediately imposed.

At the same time, the number of agroforestry fires that broke out across the country in the last 24 hours reached 33. Of these, 30 were quickly brought under control at the initial stage of their outbreak, while extinguishing operations continue for the remaining three.

The causes of the fires are being investigated by the local Fire Brigade investigative offices, as well as by special teams of the Directorate of Arson Crime Prevention.

In conclusion, the Fire Brigade appeals to citizens to exercise special caution during the fire season and, in case of fire outbreak, to comply with the instructions of the competent authorities for the protection of their lives and property.
