New developments are taking place in the case of the murder of 39-year-old Vasiliki in Kalamata, as all indications are that her sister will temporarily take care of the family’s two minor children.
The decision comes after the 41-year-old husband of the woman, who faces charges for her murder, was remanded in custody. A final decision on custody of the children is expected to be made by the relevant prosecution authorities in the near future.
Until the relevant procedures are completed, the two minor children are still being accommodated at the Kalamata Hospital, where they are under protection and receiving psychological support from experts.
Reports say that the only relative from their mother’s paternal family who has the right to visit is the 39-year-old’s sister, who is constantly at their side during their stay at the hospital.
The tragic case has shocked the local community, with public agencies and social structures looking for ways to support the children and their aunt.
In this context, the Municipality of Kalamata, in cooperation with the local Church, is examining solutions for the family’s accommodation, so that the children can move immediately to a safe environment as soon as they are discharged from the hospital.
Actions are underway to ensure the necessary living conditions, while professional support for Vasiliki’s sister, who is expected to take on the upbringing of the two children, is also being considered.
At the same time, the competent authorities have prohibited any communication between the children and the parents of the accused. The decision was taken after the 41-year-old’s apology, during which he reportedly attempted to shift responsibility for the crime to the victim herself.
Social services remain on constant vigilance, prioritising the mental health and protection of the two minors, who are being asked to deal with the consequences of a deeply traumatic experience.
