In a public post, Deputy Transport Minister Konstantinos Kyranakis thanked Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis for his offer to take up the position of Secretary of the Political Committee of New Democracy, describing the occasion as particularly important for the party.
Kyranakis announced that he accepts the proposal and officially puts his candidacy to the discretion of the members of the Political Committee.
As he said, this is the greatest honour he has received during his political career, which began 21 years ago when he joined the GAP-NDFK as a freshman. At the same time, he stressed that he fully understands the weight of responsibility towards the history of New Democracy and the members and cadres of the party.
In his message, he spoke of unity, commitment to the principles of the party and optimism for the future of the country, while he praised the role of Kyriakos Mitsotakis, attributing to him the electoral successes that New Democracy has recorded in recent years.
At the same time, he set as key objectives both victory in the next elections and the prevalence of the party’s ideas, with the ultimate goal, he said, of a stronger Greece.
The election of a new secretary became necessary after Kostas Skreka left the post last April. Until now, the duties were held temporarily by Stelios Kontadakis, who is expected to maintain an active role in the party apparatus.
The candidacy of Konstantinos Kyranakis is to be put up for approval at the meeting of the ND Political Committee, which is scheduled for Wednesday, June 10 at 16:00, chaired by Kyriakos Mitsotakis. According to the relevant announcement, the only subject of the meeting will be the election of a new Secretary.
His move to party duties leaves the position of deputy transport minister vacant, which is expected to lead to limited changes in the government’s line-up. Reports converge that a complete reshuffle is not on the table, but rather targeted interventions to fill specific positions.
These include replacing the deputy transport minister, as well as filling the position of deputy minister of environment and energy, which remains vacant following the death of Nikos Tagaras.
At the same time, reports suggest that Tasos Hadjivassiliou is close to returning to the government, possibly taking over as deputy foreign minister in charge of European affairs and the preparation of the Greek presidency of the European Union.
The relevant decisions are expected to be made after the Political Committee meeting, and probably towards the end of next week, although the Prime Minister’s final choices for the people who will staff the government remain under development.
