By 2028, the active public road transport fleet will exceed 2,000 vehicles, of which around 1,700 will be new buses, marking a substantial and in-depth fleet renewal.
Sources at the Ministry of Infrastructure – Transport stress that this is a structural upgrade of the transport system, with a specific timetable and secured funding.
Today, there are about 1,250 vehicles operating, covering the entire network. Of these, 871 are already new.
In the coming month, another 205 new vehicles (125 electric, 13 CNG IVECO and 67 CNG Menarini) will enter service, bringing the number of new vehicles to 1,076. This boost is not an isolated move, but part of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure’s basic plan to renew the entire bus fleet.
By the end of 2026, the enhancement will continue with an additional 201 new vehicles, including 120 electric buses through leasing and 81 privately owned buses, with an additional 12 suburban lines being granted. At the same time, all older Euro 2 technology vehicles are being withdrawn during this period.As a result, the number of new vehicles will amount to 1,277 by the end of this year.

By 2028, an additional renewal of the fleet with 396 modern vehicles is foreseen through a combination of European and national funding (NSRF, Modernization Fund, Social Climate Fund), with total resources of more than €290 million.

With the completion of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport’s planning, the total number of active fleet in 2028 will be 2,000 vehicles, 1,673 of which will be new, “signalling a total fleet upgrade, with a focus on electrification, reducing the environmental footprint and improving the daily service to citizens,” the same sources say.
