Nikos Androulakis, president of PASOK-Movement for Change, laid a wreath at the memorial of the executed at the Skopitirio Kaisariani this morning, honouring the memory of the victims and sending a message about the importance of the day.
In a statement, he stressed that Labour Day symbolizes the continuous struggle, solidarity and responsibility, values which, he said, should be a daily attitude to life for the formation of a more just society.
Referring to the historical site of Kaisariani, he pointed out that it is a place of deep memory, where 82 years ago 200 Greeks were executed by the Nazi occupation forces during the 1941-1944 occupation of Greece. He stressed that this year’s anniversary has a special symbolism, as an important photographic document has recently come to light that depicts those dramatic moments and the heroism of those executed.
Androulakis concluded by saying that the preservation of historical memory, combined with the assertion of labour and human rights, is a prerequisite for a society with perspective and hope, especially for the younger generations.
