The development of real estate for the benefit of the local community and the strengthening of affordable housing was the subject of today’s meeting between the Minister of Social Cohesion and Family, Domna Michaelidou, and the Mayor of Thessaloniki, Stelios Angeloudis, in the context of the ongoing and highly effective cooperation between the two sides.
During the discussion, the success of the joint actions taken so far was underlined, with a typical example being the completion of the renovation of 40 apartments in Thessaloniki, which are already in the process of being leased. This is irrefutable proof of the speed and efficiency with which the partnership between the Ministry and the municipality is working, offering immediate housing relief solutions to vulnerable citizens.
The focus of the discussion was on the extension of the partnership with the institution of the Social Counterpart, in order to activate immediately plots of land of the Ministry for the construction of new social housing.
The Minister welcomed the readiness of the Municipality of Thessaloniki to undertake all the necessary actions – from studies to the tendering and management of the projects – in order to create new available social housing to be included in the national affordable housing policy.
“We have an excellent partnership with the Mayor of Thessaloniki that is producing work. The first 40 apartments delivered for use in the city were the beginning. We are continuing at the same speed, making use of public property through Social Rent and creating new social infrastructure that responds to the real needs of Thessaloniki residents. Our common will to provide solutions guarantees that these projects will become a reality as soon as possible,” said Ms Michaelidou, seeing off Mr Angeloudis from the ministry.
For his part, the mayor of Thessaloniki said: “Social housing is an absolute priority for the Municipality of Thessaloniki. As part of the municipality’s policy to further housing support for vulnerable citizens, I have today submitted to the Minister specific proposals for the allocation to our municipality, properties of the Ministry, to be used in this direction. It is the duty and obligation of all of us to respond to the challenges of the housing crisis by producing tangible results for the benefit of our citizens.”
