Domna Michailidou referred to the housing issue and policies for social housing in a discussion at the Delphi Economic Forum.

As she stressed, the country is very close to presenting the National Housing Strategy, which captures the main problems and needs both at institutional and geographical level. At the same time, the government is promoting an extensive package of 43 measures, totalling 7 billion euros, including services, subsidies and financial support.

She pointed out that about 3 out of 10 Greeks do not own their own homes. Although this percentage remains lower than in other European Union countries, she stressed the need for support, either for acquiring a home or for securing affordable housing.

He also announced that at the end of May a platform will be launched through which 30,000 citizens will be able to receive up to 36,000 euros for home renovation, either for home ownership or renting.

In addition, he said that the auction of 20 properties for social consideration will proceed in 2026, while the first 700 homes in inactive camps are expected to be delivered by 2029. The housing stock, he said, will be bolstered both by new construction and by bringing existing properties back to the market.

Finally, he stressed that the creation of 2,300 homes is underway to house public servants – such as nurses, doctors and teachers – who currently find it difficult to meet the cost of rent by living in modern and energy-efficient homes.
