In a tough statement, Frentis Beleris responds to what Edi Rama claimed, setting the record straight on what really happened in Himara. The current MEP accuses the Albanian Prime Minister of trying to whitewash a situation that started with his own detention two days before the elections, pointing out that the justice system in Albania was used as a tool to change the election result.
Beleris makes clear that his adventure did not end “wonderfully”, as Rama claimed, as he was deprived of the right to represent his fellow citizens as mayor. At the same time, he points out that his presence today in the European Parliament is due to the decisive support of Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the Greek citizens, sending the message that Hellenism does not bend behind bars.
Fredis Beleri’s post in detail :
“Mr. Rama seems to continue to disregard the principles of the rule of law which in my case had no application in a country that has even chosen the European path of integration.
I want to remind him that I was elected Mayor of Himarra from prison where he himself by coup methods put me two days before the elections. So if my adventure had “ended wonderfully”, as he claimed yesterday at the Delphi Forum, I would be Mayor of Himarra today, representing my fellow citizens.
As for the offsetting that Mr. Rama attempted with other mayoral cases, I leave his lies to the judgment of his historical future, the citizens of Albania themselves and especially the Greek ethnic minority. Because, the “pattern” he spoke about is the one he himself established, instrumentalizing judicial “reform” to change election results that do not suit him.
Finally, the fact that the black spot that Mr. Rama created in Greek-Albanian relations is fading today is due solely to the decisive actions of the Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who placed me on the European candidate list of our party and to the Greek people who honored me with their vote.
