The country’s progress in the modernization of customs and the fight against fraud was presented by the Minister of National Economy and Finance Kyriakos Pierrakakis to the European Public Prosecutor Laura Covesi. The presentation was held at the premises of the Independent Public Revenue Authority by the Administrator of the Hellenic Revenue Authority, George Pitsilis.

In a post on social media, the minister said that “in our meeting today with the European Public Prosecutor Laura Kövesi we focused on the progress of the modernisation of customs”. He stresses that “this is an important project, which is progressing at an extremely high speed, thanks to the excellent cooperation between the Independent Public Revenue Authority and the European Public Prosecutor’s Office – EPPO.”

Referring to the major investigation by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) into criminal networks bringing illegal or undervalued goods from China into the EU in order to avoid customs duties and VAT, Kyriakos Pierrakakis underlines in his post that “Operation Calypso is a success story, proving in practice that cooperation between Greek and European authorities can produce great results in the fight against customs and tax fraud”.
