Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met today at the Maximou Mansion with Palestinian Authority Vice President Hussein al-Sheikh and discussed the latest developments in Iran and the wider Middle East region.

The Prime Minister welcomed the announcements that the Straits of Hormuz will be open for commercial ships, as well as the achievement of a 10-day ceasefire in Lebanon. He also stressed the importance of implementing the next phase of the Gaza peace plan and expressed concern about the situation in the West Bank. The Prime Minister reiterated Greece’s readiness to assist where required.

After the meeting, the Prime Minister made the following statement:

I am very pleased, Mr. Vice President, to welcome you to Athens. I hope today is a better day. We have, at least, some positive developments, good news regarding the Straits of Hormuz. It is very important for the global economy to ensure that the Straits remain open, without transit fees or other barriers.

There is also good news regarding the ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel, as well as direct talks between the two sides.

Of course, all of this has particular relevance to what we will be discussing. You know that my visit to Ramallah a few months ago was particularly constructive. You know that we remain committed to the Palestinian cause and I am particularly interested to hear your views on the next steps, both in the West Bank and in Gaza. We want to see a long-term and sustainable solution and we will continue to work towards that.
