Health Minister Adonis Georgiades blames PASOK for an “institutional state of affairs” in relation to the renewal of Popi Papandreou’s term of office at the European Public Prosecutor’s Office.
In a post, he argued that the European Public Prosecutor’s Office had attempted “in violation of the Constitution” to interfere with the powers of the Supreme Judicial Council of the Supreme Court in order to unilaterally renew the term of prosecutor Popi Papandreou.
The Health Minister’s post
“@pasok issued the following statement on my statements yesterday on the renewal of Ms Papandreou’s term of office: “*Open attack by Ad. Georgiades’ attack on the judiciary*- *They do not trust and respect the judiciary. They cannot stand accountability* *Statement by Kostas Tsoukalas, Press Spokesman of PASOK-Charity Movement on the statements of Ad. Georgiades* Mr Mitsotakis is in a panic. He has made Mr Georgiades attack the judiciary in an unfair way. He even went so far as to lie about the European Public Prosecutor’s office that she is “playing games” in order to renew her term of office. He deliberately omitted to say that Ms Papandreou’s term has already been renewed since November 2025, in order to set up the government’s narrative that the successive cases in Parliament are not the result of corruption and scandals but the product of a “fraudulent” plan. Not only do they not trust but also do not respect the judiciary. They cannot stand justice and accountability. They choose fanaticism and toxicity to remain clinging to power. The decadence and regimentation of which Mr Georgiades is the genuine spokesman, Greeks do not deserve.”
It is an institutional state of affairs for our country that the press spokesman of the opposition does not know that Ms Papandreou’s term of office at the European Public Prosecutor’s Office has NOT BEEN RENEWED. Indeed, the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, in violation of the Greek Constitution, to which PASOK has also sworn obedience, has attempted to usurp the exclusive jurisdiction of the Supreme Judicial Council of the Supreme Court and unilaterally renew Mrs Papandreou’s term of office. The judgment is null and void. Only the Supreme Judicial Council of the Supreme Court can renew or not renew her term of office and no one else. The Council has not yet convened and will probably meet sometime in May. I don’t know whether she will renew it or not because it is not my business. But I am trying to understand the motive that prompted a public prosecutor to cause a political crisis in the country by repeated leaks and by sending ridiculous files against fellow Members, and the truth is that the timing of the Council meeting with the sending of this ridiculous file to Parliament puzzles me. In any case, my position is that the institution of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office under trial will not last in any EU Member State if it starts playing political domestic games and the representatives of this institution have a responsibility to protect it. I hope that PASOK respects the Constitution and the Supreme Court and does not want to cooperate in such an attempt to devalue it, as was attempted with the invalid renewal of Mrs Papandreou’s term of office without consulting the Supreme Court of our country. Christ is risen”
