The protection of the country’s borders is carried out within the framework of international, EU and national law, with full respect for fundamental rights and human dignity, sources at the Ministry of Citizen Protection said in response to a BBC report that mercenaries, under police orders, were pushing back refugees and migrants at the Greek land border with Turkey.

“The Greek authorities have repeatedly taken a position in recent years on similar allegations, with clarity and documentation”, the same sources stress, adding that such reports and publications are based primarily on testimonies and secondary evidence, which cannot be confirmed, while their assessment is often based on the convergence of allegations rather than on evidence.

In conclusion, the Ministry of Citizen Protection officials note that the management of migratory flows is a complex challenge, especially in areas of increased pressure, such as the external borders of the European Union. Greece, they stress, is responding to this responsibility consistently, while ensuring compliance with the law and its international obligations. At the same time, the competent authorities remain at the disposal of any institutional body to provide information and to assist in any process aimed at ensuring transparency and objective reflection of the facts.
