The Foreign Ministry responded to Hakan Fidan’s statements through a statement.
The Foreign Ministry said Greece “does not accept suggestions, nor does it owe explanations to anyone” and stressed that the country is working consistently for stability.
“Dangerous statements and attempts to distort reality are of no use,” the MFA says in response to what Hakan Fidan said.
The Foreign Ministry’s statement
.
Greece, as a member state of the European Union and NATO and an elected member of the United Nations Security Council, has proven that it has consistently worked for stability, good neighbourly relations and peace over time.
Both the bilateral cooperation between Greece and Israel and the trilateral cooperation between Greece, the Republic of Cyprus and Israel, as well as all other trilateral cooperation between Greece and Israel, have a peaceful purpose and are not directed against third parties.
Greece formulates its foreign policy independently, does not accept suggestions, nor does it owe explanations to anyone. Risk-taking and attempts to distort reality are of no use, especially in this period of regional instability and uncertainty.
Fidan: Greece-Israel cooperation may even lead to war
.
It will be recalled that the Turkish Foreign Minister attacked Greece and Cyprus for their cooperation with Israel. “Cooperation between Greece, the “Greek Cypriot Administration” and Israel does not bring more trust, it brings more mistrust. It brings more problems and war,” he claimed to Anadolu.
“We see that Greece is following extremely dangerous policies here. There are very interesting aspects to Greece’s attempt to follow a kind of policy that no other country in Europe is following on its own,” Fidan said.
“Neither Greece nor the ‘Greek Cypriot Administration’ needs military cooperation with Israel. Greece is already a member of NATO and the ‘Greek Cypriot Administration’ has the support of the E.U. What strategic logic could justify seeking this kind of cooperation is something that even they cannot explain to me,” he added.
Fidan claimed that “Israel may seek to label Turkey as a new adversary after Iran, as it cannot survive without an enemy.”
