A meeting between Minister of Immigration and Asylum Thanos Plevris and the European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration, Magnus Bruner, took place today in Brussels, focusing on the implementation of the New Pact on Immigration and Asylum. The meeting focused on migration developments and the securing of European borders.
The Minister presented Greece’s readiness for the full implementation of the new European framework, stressing that the necessary operational and administrative adjustments are underway to ensure its effective implementation.
Special reference was made to the situation in the Eastern Aegean, where, according to the data presented, there has been a reduction of illegal migration flows by about 70%. It was pointed out that this development is attributed to enhanced border surveillance, as well as to cooperation with the Turkish authorities and Frontex.
The discussion also focused on the situation in Libya, with both sides examining the possibility of increasing migratory pressure on Crete and the measures required to deal with possible new flows.
The Minister and the European Commissioner, as stated in a ministry statement, agreed on the need to fully implement the New Pact on Immigration and Asylum, with particular emphasis on strengthening returns and the effective protection of European borders.
