Thanasis Patras was a guest on the show “Better is not possible” with Natalia Germanou, in an interview that aired on Sunday, June 7. The presenter referred both to his career in television and political current affairs, while explaining the reasons that led him to sign the statute of the new political body associated with Alexis Tsipras.
Talking about today’s television reality, Thanasis Patras explained that he consciously chooses to emphasize entertainment, as he believes that the climate of the times is already heavy enough. As he noted, the difficulties of everyday life cannot be eliminated by a TV show, but the way one approaches reality can make a difference. For him, entertainment serves as a necessary outlet from the pressure of constant exposure to negative news.
At the same time, he clarified that his choice to invest in lighter content does not mean that he avoids taking a stand or that he has no opinion on what is happening. As he said, he believes that entertainment still has its own potential on television, comparing the TV landscape to a “supermarket” offering different products for different audience needs.
Then the discussion turned to politics and in particular his decision to support Alexis Tsipras’ initiative. The presenter explained that ideologically he feels closer to the Left, while disagreeing with the view that the former prime minister is solely responsible for the problems the country faced in the past years.
As he argued, the economic crisis and the period of memoranda had begun several years before Alexis Tsipras’ administration, a fact that, in his view, is often overlooked in public debate. Moreover, he assessed that today there is no strong and effective opposition force, which also contributed to the stance he chose to take.
Reflecting on the former prime minister’s term in government, Thanasis Patras acknowledged that there were failures and mismanagement, but stressed that mistakes are an inevitable part of governance. At the same time, he commented on the criticisms regarding pre-election commitments that were not implemented, expressing the view that the reality of governance differs significantly from the opposition’s position.
According to him, when a politician assumes governmental responsibility, he is called upon to reassess data, adjust his choices and make decisions based on the stability of the country and the economy, even if this means moving away from initial announcements or positions.
