The Athens Bar Association’s resolution calling for the resignation of the Supreme Court prosecutor, Konstantinos Tzavellas, of his decision to put the wiretapping case on file has caused a strong reaction.
The President of the Union of Greek Lawyers e-Themis and candidate in the last APA elections, Dimitris Anastasopoulos, strongly criticized the Association’s administration, arguing that it is moving away from its institutional role.
According to him, the meeting on the wiretapping case did not adopt the unanimous and softer decision of the Bar Association Coordination Committee. Instead, a different statement, which he described as “extreme” and “anti-institutional”, was adopted by a majority vote.
Mr. Anastasopoulos expressed concern that such positions may damage the authority of the Judiciary and affect the institutional role of the AIA, stressing that decisions should be taken on the basis of institutional responsibility and not political expediency.
It is recalled that the Hellenic Union of Public Prosecutors has also expressed its opposition to the resolution, noting that such a request moves outside the constitutional and legislative framework, approaching the limits of a serious institutional aberration.
