Jorgos Avtias, MEP of the New Democracy Party, as rapporteur of the European People’s Party, submitted ten proposals to the Economic Affairs Committee of the European Parliament on the European Union’s economic policy on immigration and asylum, as stated in a relevant statement.

Mr. Avtias “placed particular emphasis on the need for increased funding for regions under pressure from strong migratory flows and for adequate funding for the Greek borders, as is the case for the rest of Europe’s eastern borders.” At the same time, he also called for the completion of projects on Evros.

“I call for the completion of the works on the Evros River at the border with Turkey. Remember? There was a hybrid attack with 25,000 illegal migrants who wanted to break the border,” he said. He also stressed the need for a “strong presence” of Frontex in frontline member states and the need to speed up procedures for “fast and efficient returns of irregular migrants to third countries, with full respect for human rights.”

The 10 proposals presented to the Finance Committee are:

1. Increase funding for immigration and asylum

2. Ability to transfer funds between the Funds related to migration and asylum.

3. Strengthen Frontex presence in frontline states.

4. Fast and efficient procedures for the return of illegal migrants to third countries, with full respect for human rights.

5. Continued funding for regions pressured by intense migratory flows.

6. Immediate implementation of the new immigration and asylum regulation.

7. Earmarked funding to Member States under pressure from migratory flows

8. Funding for the completion of the Ebro projects on the border with Turkey.

9. Adequate funding for the borders of frontline states pressured by migratory flows.

10. Strict control and full transparency on funds allocated to third countries for the management of migration flows.
