Gogo Mastrocosta has passed away at the age of 56, after a long and difficult battle with cancer. In public statements she had spoken openly about her illness and the shocking moment she was informed of her diagnosis. “I found out two days after my daughter was born,” she had confessed, describing the profound contrast between the joy of motherhood and the fear that followed.

On the occasion of Fofi Gennimata’s death, she had referred to the great mental struggle that every woman and mother experiences when faced with such a serious illness. “Every mother, every woman who goes through something like this, the first thing you think of is this, my children,” she had said.

Despite the fact that many described her as a “fighter” and “winner”, she also attributed her journey to luck. “I was told you’re a fighter, you’re a winner, you guys were lucky,” she had said, stressing that in such trials it was human to have moments of weakness and fear. As she had admitted, “it’s not possible not to faint,” while stressing the importance of psychological support.

She had chosen not to let the disease completely define her life. “At a certain point I didn’t let it affect my life so much, I started doing the little things that make you feel normal,” she had said, while sending a message of optimism and strength to those fighting their own battle.
