The journey to Resurrection is expected to be met with unsettled weather as Holy Week brings rain and autumn chill in many areas. According to the National Weather Service, the instability will gradually subside, giving way to clear spring weather on Easter Sunday.
The backdrop of instability and areas with rain
Holy Week continues with partly cloudy conditions and local rainfall, which will mainly affect eastern Macedonia, Thrace, Thessaly, eastern Sterea and Evia. In the northeastern parts of the country, the rains are expected to intensify after noon, with the possibility of isolated thunderstorms. In the rest of the mainland and in Crete, clouds will be partly cloudy, but sporadic showers may occur at noon and in the afternoon, mainly in mountainous areas.
Winds and temperature variations
.
Winds will blow from the north, with winds reaching 6 Beaufort in the west and south, while especially in the northern Ionian Sea they will reach up to 7 Beaufort locally. The temperature will show a significant drop in the north and east, with the mercury in Thrace and Macedonia not exceeding 14 degrees Celsius. In southern Greece, the Cyclades and the Dodecanese, conditions will remain milder, with maximum values reaching 20 to 21 degrees Celsius.
The weather in Athens and Thessaloniki
In Attica, clouds are forecast to thicken at times, bringing occasional local rain mainly at noon, with temperatures ranging from 12 to 20 degrees Celsius. In Thessaloniki, clouds will also be partly cloudy with northerly winds reaching 5 Beaufort in the morning, while the temperature will reach up to 17 degrees. In the mountains of Macedonia, light snowfall is possible.
The forecast for Easter Sunday
.
Despite the unsettled start, meteorologists estimate that the weather will “lock in” at spring levels for Easter Sunday. Volatility will be significantly reduced and sunshine will prevail across most of the country, allowing holidaymakers to celebrate the Lenten day with favourable conditions and rising temperatures.
