One of the largest digital transformation projects in the field of road safety in Greece is back on track, as the tender for the supply and installation of 1,000 traffic violation cameras has been submitted for publication on the European public procurement portal TED (Tenders Electronic Daily).

The development marks the restart of a process that was halted a few months ago when the Ministry of Digital Governance cancelled the original tender, following a series of preliminary appeals filed by companies and consortia in the sector.

The project, with a total budget of around €88 million, is a key pillar of the national strategy to improve road safety and reduce road accidents. The first tender procedure had generated strong interest in the market, but ran into legal and technical objections, mainly related to specific requirements of the technical specifications.

The appeals eventually led the ministry to decide to cancel the tender before the binding offer phase in order to review the terms and conditions and reduce the risk of further delays.

The plan, according to the new tender, calls for the installation of 1,000 cameras at high-risk points on the national and urban road network. The cameras will be able to record a range of violations of the Road Traffic Code, including exceeding speed limits, red light violations, illegal use of bus lanes and dangerous traffic violations associated with an increased risk of causing accidents.
