The Minister of Migration and Asylum, Thanos Plevris, made his first official visit to the accommodation facility for voluntary return applicants in Attiko Alsos, sending a message of strengthening voluntary return policies.

The structure plays a key role in the implementation of the Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration (AVRR) programme, which is implemented by the International Organization for Migration. The programme is a key tool of both national and European migration policy, enabling third country nationals to return safely and with dignity to their home countries.

According to available data, since the launch of AVRR programmes in Greece in 2010, more than 59,000 people have benefited, while thousands have received additional support for their social and economic reintegration.

During the visit, the Minister spoke with the staff of the IOM and the Reception and Identification Service, was briefed on the operating procedures of the structure and the support provided to the beneficiaries, while emphasis was placed on the role of voluntary returns as a means of managing migration flows.

In a statement, Mr. Plevris underlined:

“Greece cannot and will not be a country of illegal residence. Those who are not entitled to international protection must return to their countries. Voluntary return programmes are a clear, organised and dignified exit framework, but at the same time it sends a clear message: staying without a legal basis is not an option. We strengthen every tool that contributes to decongestion and order in the migration field, with respect for rights, but also with a full commitment to the application of the rules. The country has limits and they will be respected.”

He congratulated the IOM for the implementation of the programme, noting that in the first quarter of 2026 alone, there was a 20% increase in returns compared to the same period in 2025, as well as a 44% decrease in maritime migration flows.

The visit is part of the ministry’s broader strategy to boost returns and shape a more effective and managed migration policy.
