The acceleration of hydrocarbon exploration in Greece, with the aim of conducting seismic exploration south of Crete by the end of 2026, was the outcome of a meeting of Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou and Deputy Minister Nikos Tsafos with a delegation from Chevron in Houston.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the CERAWeek conference and is part of the effort to accelerate hydrocarbon exploration and attract large energy groups, at a time when Europe is looking for alternative energy sources due to increased geopolitical uncertainty.

“I had a meaningful meeting with Chevron. With Vice Presidents Kevin McLachlan and Gavin Lewis. After the ratification of the energy agreements, we are moving directly to their implementation. We have set a clear timetable and initiated the necessary actions so that we have the seismic surveys south of Crete before the end of 2026,” Papastavrou said in a statement to ERT.

The Energy Minister linked energy developments to the international situation, noting that “the crisis in the Middle East emphatically confirms the choice of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis for the immediate development of the hydrocarbons sector”, while adding that “Greece is steadily moving towards energy self-sufficiency based on its strengths and national wealth”.

“We are confidently upgrading our geopolitical role and building an energy secure future for our country,” concluded Mr. Papastavrou in his statement after the conclusion of the meeting.
