The sea drone found in Lefkada is Ukrainian, Defence Minister Nikos Dendias said in Brussels, in the presence of his Ukrainian counterpart, stressing that “this is an extremely serious matter”.

“I will have the opportunity to inform my counterparts, in the presence of the Ukrainian Defence Minister, that we now have the certainty that the maritime drone we caught in Greece (Lefkada) is Ukrainian.

You understand that the presence of the maritime drone affects the freedom of navigation, but it also affects the safety of navigation. This is an extremely serious issue,” Dendias said, while attending the meeting of EU Defence Ministers in Brussels.

The issue of the maritime drone with explosives in Lefkada was also raised yesterday, Monday, by Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis at the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels.

Mr. Gerapetritis referred to “a particularly serious development”, announcing that “when the investigation is completed and the necessary technical characteristics are extracted, there will be a reaction on the part of the Greek government with the necessary steps”, sending clear messages in all directions about the limits of the Greek authorities’ endurance in the face of similar phenomena.

It is noted that the drone was found by fishermen in Vasiliki, Lefkada, when they spotted the black speedboat inside a sea cave near Cape Doukato, also known as Kavos of Kyra.

According to the Coast Guard, the incident occurred on May 7, when fishermen in the area noticed the presence of the vessel in an inaccessible part of the coastline.

The drone was found hidden inside a cave on the island and carried about 100 kilograms of explosives placed in a barrel.

It was initially towed to the local port and then transported to Platygiali in Astakos, where investigations and technical checks are ongoing.
