The “Victory”
The metro module (TBM) “Victory” started its route from the Trear TBM Fresco Veikou and at the present moment it has passed the KYPSELI Station having already constructed about 3150 meters of ready tunnel, continuing its route to the JUDGMENT STATION.
The route is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026, according to the current timetable, exiting from the special Evaggelismos shaft in the area of Evaggelismos station.
The second metro module (TBM) “Athena” started its route from the TTM Katehaki Frear and arrived at the “Evangelismos” shaft at 12.02.26. The “Athena” metro module, starting from Katehaki, completed the drilling and, at the same time, the construction of a 5.1 km long tunnel, having passed through the areas: Gudi, Zografou, Ilisia, Panepistopolis and Kaisariani.
With its progress completed on schedule, it is expected to take close to 3 months to be dismantled and partially removed from the special Evaggelismos shaft in the area of Evaggelismos station.
The exit of the “Athena” Metromodern demonstrated the innovations implemented for the first time, where not the slightest problem was created during its transit, which is due to the construction methodology and design, which have completely innovative features.
In addition, the construction of the stations Alsos Veikou, Galatsy, Elikonos, Kypseli, Dikastiria, Alexandra, Akadimia, Kolonaki, Zografou, Kaisariani, Ilisia, is in an important phase, while the station Exarchia has already been delivered to the contractor AVAX-GHELLA-ALSTOM consortium.
At the stations of Panepistemisoupoli there is an ongoing archaeological rescue survey (an ancient road has been found), at the station of Goudi the archaeological excavations have been completed, but a central pipeline of EYDAP has been found and the best option is being examined and at the station of Evangelism there is the well-known appeal for the Rizari Park while the opposition of the Municipality of Athens has been added.
According to the current schedule, unless unforeseen construction difficulties arise, the completion of the projects under the contractual obligation is set for the end of 2029.

Extension of Line 2 of the Athens Metro to Ilion
The extension currently being implemented in Attica is that of Line 2 to Ilion, about 4 km long with 3 stations (Palatiani, Ilion and Ag. Nikolaos). At the same time, the extension and modernization of the depot in Elaionas and the upgrade – replacement of the existing E/M systems of Lines 2 and 3 of the Athens Metro have been included in the same project.
The first stage of the tender is currently underway. The contractual time for completion of the project is five (5) years from the signing of the contract.
The Extension to Ilion project also includes the extension of the existing depot at Elaiona. Since the future operation of the Extension, as well as the other current needs of HELLENIC METRO S.A. make it necessary to find and construct additional depot space for the service of trains, the extension of the Eleonas depot to a neighbouring area of approximately 20 acres will proceed at the same time.
With the future operation of the extension, it becomes necessary to upgrade/replace certain E/M Systems in a large part or even in the whole of Metro Lines 2 & 3, without which their further extension will not be possible.
For this reason, the project notice also includes the upgrade and/or replacement of the digital data transmission system in all the stations of Lines 2 & 3 currently in operation. The modifications to these systems will require new equipment and software both at the existing Control Centre at Syntagma and locally at stations and shafts. However, their connection to the current systems is planned to take place without any disruption to the operation of Lines 2 and 3.
The extension will cover the route after the “Anthoupoli” station to the area of Ilion and Agios Nikolaos and further in the future to Acharnes and has been designed to:
To serve many densely populated areas of the western suburbs.
The future increase in the networking of Metro Lines with the provision of a connection to the “Ilion” station with the future extension of Line 4 to Petroupolis.
The new stations will be:
“Palatiani” station:Located at the intersection of Thevon and Andreas Papandreou Streets, with two entrances on either side of Thevon Street.
“Ilion” station: Located at the intersection of Thebes and Eleon streets, with two entrances on either side of Thebes Street and provision for connecting/transferring passengers to the station of the same name of the future Line 4 Extension to Petroupolis.
“Agios Nikolaos” Station. Nikolaos.
A transfer station is expected to be built in Palatiani in an adjacent area adjacent to the “Palatiani” station between Andreas Papandreou and Ikoniou streets, with a three-level underground car park with a capacity of 150 cars, with a direct connection to the station. On the surface, after the completion of its construction, it is planned to form a Bus Transfer Area.
This section of Line 2 to the Agios Nikolaos area is estimated to serve at least 67.000 passengers per day, while the number of local residents served by the 3 new stations within 500 metres of their homes is estimated at around 42,000 and the corresponding jobs served at around 5,000.
Line 4 – Future Expansions – B-E Sectors
The new Line 4 of the Athens Metro , however, will not be limited to Section A’ “Also Veikou-Goudi”, as the plan is to extend it to other areas as well.
The next project that has been prioritized is the construction of the “Goudi-Lykovrisi” section with the stations Goudi, Katehaki, Faros, Filothei, Sidera, Olympic Stadium, Paradisos, OTE, Maroussi, Pefki and Lykovrisi.
The line will pass through Kifissia Avenue, which has a serious daily traffic problem. This project is intended to end the isolation from fixed-route transport of the residents of the northern suburbs and the employees of the hundreds of companies based along this central road.
This section will serve OAKA and the commercial pole of the area, while the “Lykovrisi” station will terminate very close to the National Road.
The current Athens Metro Line Development Plan includes Metro Line 4, Grove Park – Evangelismos – Faros – Marousi, with its extensions (a) to Byron/Ano Ilioupolis and (b) to Petroupolis and National Road. Line 4, “U” shaped, consists of 2 radial legs, towards Galati and Marousi, and a central section passing through the centre of Athens, has a total length of 38.2 km, includes 35 stations in total and consists of five individual discrete sections, A, B, C, D and E:
Section A: Veikou-Goudi Grove (12.8 km long and 15 stations)
Section B: Gudi-Maroussi (9.6 km long and 8 stations)
Section C: Evangelismos-Ano Ilioupoli (4.1 km long and 3 stations)
Section D: Veikou Grove-Petroupoli (7.5 km long and 6 stations)
Section E: Maroussi-Ethniki Odos (4.4 km long and 3 stations)
Future extensions in Attica
Planning the extensions is another important part of the company’s scope. In Athens, the authority responsible for this level of planning is OASA. It is currently implementing the transport study of Attica, from which the planning, feasibility and viability of extensions to the Metro network will emerge.
At the same time, studies have already begun on the connection of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre with the existing metro network, while the extension of the metro to Glyfada and the extension of Line 4 in both directions remain in the national planning.
The extension of Line 4 westwards, from the station “Alsos Veikou” to Agioi Anargyros and Petroupolis, which will pass through Nea Ionia and Nea Philadelphia and the AEK stadium, is being studied.
Similarly, the Line 4 Extension north, from Katehaki station to Marousi, Pefki, Lykovrisi and National Road.
The underground extension of Line 1 north, from “Kifissia” station to N. Eritrea and the National Road (Varybobi junction).
The new lines are in the study phase where they require maturation and are subject to funding.
The priority is the extension of Line 4 to Maroussi and the National Road via Kifissia, as well as the new directions of Line 2 Glyfada.
In the southern sector, the final layout of the extension to Glyfada is under consideration. The proposal foresees two branches: one to Ano Glyfada and the second to the city centre via the Hellenikon area. With this addition, the Metro will for the first time have two branches on the same line. The project requires studies to mature and funding to be secured.
The extension of Line 4 to Maroussi and the National Road via Kifissia Avenue are also prioritized.
With these extensions, Athens aims to exceed the 100-station limit on the Metro network for the first time.
The 3 prioritised extensions
The Line 2 extension to Ilion, which includes 3 new stations, is already in the tender process.
The extension of Line 2 to Ano Glyfada, with 2 stations, as well as a new branch to the center of Glyfada via Elliniko, with two more stations. The project requires maturing studies and securing funding.
The extension of Line 4 to Maroussi – National Road, which includes 11 new stations across the northern arc. The project requires maturing studies and securing funding.
These are interventions with varying degrees of complexity and requirements, which means that some studies may take five years to reach maturity, while others may take ten years or more to reach the stage of maturity, inclusion in a funding programme, securing funding, implementation through a competitive tendering process.
