The crews are working at full speed to “give birth” to the suburban forest of Evkarpia in the municipality of Pavlos Melas and to officially hand over the area, on June 6, to residents and visitors of western Thessaloniki. Already 100,000 trees have been planted, 220,000 bushes have been treed, while work on the construction of the playground and the church is currently being completed.

The forest roads and paths for hiking and exercise have been formed, a gully with plane trees in its beds is waiting to “enchant” its public, the refreshment centre is ready and awaiting its operating permit, while towards the end of May the road leading from the TITAN site to the peripheral forest and the ecological parking area will be paved.

The idea for the creation of the suburban forest in Eukarpia, which will have an unlimited view of the city and the Thermaikos Gulf, belongs to the businessman Stavros Andreadis, who undertook through a donation to transform an area of 3000 acres into a modern green lung. The chosen site is two hills separated by a ravine and located next to the Derveni Environmental Park, where for years Thessaloniki’s landfill was located.

“It is a great pleasure and satisfaction for the municipality of Pavlos Melas to cooperate with the donor, Stavros Andreadis. The first phase of the peri-urban forest of Evkarpia is completed and very soon the area will be accessible not only to the citizens of Thessaloniki, but also to the whole of Northern Greece,” said the Mayor of Pavlos Melas, Dimitris Aslanidis.

Mr. Aslanidis noted that this area is “coming alive and being transformed” and the suburban forest of Evkarpia will be another landmark for western Thessaloniki, along with the Pavlos Melas Metropolitan Park, which is also being completed and will be inaugurated on the weekend of June 12, 13 and 14.
