The bust of Sergeant George Liggeridis, who was killed while on duty during the riots in Renti, was vandalized by unknown persons last night with black paint.

The vandalism was condemned by the president of the Union of Police Officers of Thessaloniki, Theodoros Tsairidis, who wrote in a post: “At the unveiling of the bust of the Hero Police Officer LYGERIDI GEORGIU, I had said that 100 times and if it is vandalized 101 times we will be there to restore it.

Last night some sick minds went ahead with this sickening act. We have already taken all necessary steps to restore it.

These extreme and sick minorities must, with everyone’s contribution, disappear from the city of Thessaloniki. And for this to happen, everyone must act with determination, far from phobic syndromes. We owe it to our Heroes who fell in the line of duty and to the new generations.”

The bust is located in the park named after George Liggeridis, in the square of Sintrivanios, and its unveiling, which took place last October, was attended by the President of the Republic, Konstantinos Tasoulas, The President of the Republic of Greece, Mr Nikitas Kaklamanis, President of the Parliament, representatives of political parties, ministers, members of parliament, the leadership of the Greek Police and the Armed Forces, the Mayor of Thessaloniki, Mr Stelios Angeloudis, etc.
