Astypalea is among the top ten “hidden treasures” in Europe for the summer of 2026, according to a recent feature in the British newspaper The Sun
According to the publication, Astypalaia is chosen among destinations from different European countries that stand out for their authenticity, natural beauty, low environmental footprint and ability to offer unique experiences away from mass tourism.
The key criteria for selecting the destinations were the preservation of their authentic character, the possibility for visitors to discover less visible areas of Europe, their distinct natural identity and their cultural heritage.
The list includes destinations from Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, France, Germany and the Netherlands, confirming the international trend of seeking authentic and sustainable travel experiences.
The British newspaper The Sun presents Astypalaia as one of the most unique and unexplored island destinations in the Mediterranean, highlighting its unique geomorphology that has earned it the nickname “The Butterfly of the Aegean”, its crystal clear waters, its relaxed pace of life, its beaches that remain serene even during the high tourist season, and the authentic character of its settlements. At the same time, special reference is made to Chora with its emblematic architecture, the Venetian castle that dominates the settlement, the traditional taverns and the authentic elements of local life that make up a unique travel experience. This new international distinction adds to the ever-increasing recognition of Astypalea, confirming the dynamics of the destination and the effectiveness of the municipality’s promotional activities that highlight the island’s comparative advantages.
“Astypalaia manages to stand out because it offers what the modern traveller is looking for: Authentic experiences, unique natural environment, quality services and respect for local identity. We continue to enhance the international visibility of the destination, focusing on a sustainable tourism model that creates value for visitors, the local community and future generations,” said the Deputy Mayor of the Municipality of Astypalaea, Konstantinos Kambylis.
