Syros is dynamically emerging as an authentic Cycladic destination through a recent extensive feature in the German Bild. The article, entitled “Greek secret diamond: The dream island that surprises everyone”, presents Syros as a quality and up-and-coming Greek destination with a unique identity in the Cyclades. Special mention is made of the island’s capital, Ermoupoli, which is described as “a feast for the eyes” thanks to its unique neoclassical architecture (https://m.bild.de/leben-wissen/reisen/griechischer-geheimtipp-warum-diese-traum-insel-jetzt-alle-ueberrascht-69f077e9129bffc049ee17db).

Bild highlights that the area is “more reminiscent of Italy than the Cyclades”, with pastel hues, marble alleys, mansions and imposing public buildings that tell the story of an important 19th-century commercial and maritime centre. The city’s atmosphere, with influences from Venice and Central Europe, creates a unique cultural imprint on the Aegean. The feature also emphasizes Syros’ beaches, noting that the island has “an impressive number of different beaches for a Cycladic island.” From organized family-friendly beaches with golden sand and shallow waters to secluded coves accessible only by boat or hiking, the experience remains authentic and relaxed.

In addition, Syros’ gastronomy is presented as another strong element of the travel experience. The publication refers to the island’s authentic tavernas, where “fresh fish, Greek flavours and local wine are offered at fair prices”, in stark contrast to the extravagance and luxury of other popular islands. Indeed, the international recognition of Syrian cuisine is reinforced by recent international publications that speak of the island’s gastronomic renaissance, with local products such as loukoumi, halvadopita and San Michalis cheese being key “ambassadors” of the local identity.

The untouched character of Syros, described as a “paradise for nature lovers and hikers”, also occupies a special place in the tribute. Ano Syros, the feeling of tranquillity, the small settlements, the traditional paths and the authentic contact with the inhabitants create an experience that, according to Bild, “makes you relax immediately”. The island is thus promoted as a slow tourism destination, where the visitor is not just looking for a holiday, but a meaningful connection with the place, the culture and the rhythm of life in the Aegean.

It is particularly significant that, the article exceeded 100,000 readers already within its first day of publication, even taking the first place in readership. The publication is the result of a journalistic mission that was carried out in Syros in March, in the framework of the tourism promotion activities of the Municipality of Syros-Ermoupolis in cooperation with the Greek National Tourism Organization and professionals of the island and in continuation of the international tourism exhibition ITB 2026 in Berlin. This promotion is of particular importance, as Germany is one of the most important travel markets in Europe, with an audience seeking authentic, safe and quality destinations. “The publication of Syros in BILD and the great response recorded already from the first day is another confirmation that targeted extroversion, partnerships with the Greek National Tourism Organization and the organized hospitality of journalists can bring substantial results for our destination,” said the Deputy Mayor of Tourism of the Municipality of Syros-Ermoupolis, Yannis Voutsinos.
