That Crete is a “key priority for Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis”, said from Heraklion, where he has been in contact since early this morning, the secretary of the Political Committee of New Democracy, Kostas Skrekas. After the meeting with Archbishop Eugene of Crete, Mr. Skrekas had a meeting in the Region of Crete, with the regional governor Stavros Arnaoutakis, but also mayors of the Regional Unity of Heraklion, in view of the party’s pre-conference, which will finally take place on April 20, since it was decided due to the issuance of an extraordinary weather report, not to take place on Wednesday, April 1, as planned.

“For Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Crete is a key priority and I am particularly happy, because I see that here in Crete there are breathing projects, visionary projects, projects that can ensure sustainable growth for the local economy and society in the coming decades,” Mr. Skrekas, referring to the BOAK, the New Heraklion International Airport in Kastelli or modern – as he said – environmental infrastructure, which have been designed and are beginning to be implemented. As he stressed, these are projects that ensure resilience against the general problems “whether they are geopolitical, whether they are consequences of the climate crisis, or whether they are problems arising from changes in the global economy.”

He noted that Crete makes a decisive contribution to the national economy and for this reason “it must have the corresponding dividend and support from the central government”, which he added is already being implemented.

“The Greece and Crete of 2026 has nothing to do with the Greece and Crete of 2019,” Kostas Skrekas said. He noted that this must continue, adding that “we need to ensure and shield political stability, but also the economic growth we have achieved. A setback is something that neither society nor the economy can bear.”

<span style="font-family:Calibri,sans-serif Skrekas referred to the long-standing good cooperation with the local government, both with the region and the municipalities, noting the high level of the island's mayors and the dynamics that the island presents as an example for the whole country.

For his part, the regional governor Stavros Arnaoutakis warmly welcomed Mr. Skreka, also praising the quality of their cooperation.

“There has always been an excellent long-standing relationship with Mr. Skreka,” St. Arnaoutakis, adding that “in Crete we have always aimed at claiming responsibilities and resources” and that “we can stand up to the circumstances, as there is the relevant dynamics of all the mayors of the island and this is really an enviable example for the whole country”, which, as he explained, “gives us the right to claim from the central authority”.

Mr. Skreka, who is continuing his contacts in Heraklion, is accompanied by the Secretary of Organization of the Southwest, Stelios Kontadakis, the President of the IEP Heraklion Costas Giannoulakis, the Southwest MPs Lefteris Avgenakis, Costas Kefalogiannis and Maximos Senetakis, as well as members of the Prefectural Committee of the Southwest.
