The daughter of the 89-year-old man who opened fire at the National Insurance Fund and the Court of First Instance, injuring five people, describes the disturbed mental state she says her father was in.

Talking to ANT1, she said the elderly man, who has been remanded in custody, had severe behavioural problems. He claimed that in the past he had gone to the extent of locking her inside the house, and had developed a belief that she was not really his daughter and that there were “demons” around him.

She described that when she tried to approach him again at an older age, the situation remained difficult. She even recalled their meeting in Pylos, where – she said – he told her he did not consider her his child and that he had changed the locks on the house, fearing she would cause him harm.

Speaking about the course of their relationship, she explained that she gradually managed to move away, finding work and living on her own, in order to escape the environment she described as “sickening”.

The 89-year-old’s daughter also claimed that his mental state was deteriorating over time. As she described, in one of their last encounters, he spoke to her about “demons” that, in his perception, were even in her house.

As she pointed out, he refused to see doctors or pursue any treatment, which – in her view – contributed to the deterioration of her condition. She, visibly charged, noted that she could not take this situation any longer and chose to walk away for good.

At the same time, she expressed her wondering whether this development could have been avoided if there had been early care and support, noting that with proper treatment, a different course might have been charted for both her and their relationship.
