New evidence is causing shock around the case of the family with six underage children who lived in a 47-square-metre attic in Peristeri, under conditions of extreme abandonment and unsuitability.

The two parents, who were arrested after the case came to light, were sentenced by the Court of Appeals to 16 months in prison each, with the possibility of the sentence being commuted to 10 euros per day. At the same time, the court granted a stay on their appeal.

Evidence of serious neglect

A woman who has known the family since 2019 described images of severe neglect of the children, speaking on ANT1’s “Proino” show.

She said the children were visibly malnourished and neglected, and had health and behavioural problems.

“The children were stunted, underweight, had skin problems and bad teeth. They looked scared and seemed to be constantly seeking their mother’s tacit approval,” he said.

According to the witness, the older daughter had to repeat a school year, with the mother portraying this as a positive development because the two girls would be in the same classroom.

Descriptions of the family’s daily life

The same woman also described incidents of the family’s outings to local eateries.

She said the parents would sit separately from the children, with most of them going without food until the parents finished their meal.

“The parents would take a portion and feed mostly the two younger children. The other four waited without food and later shared a second portion,” he said.

The case has provoked a strong social backlash, with the relevant authorities now examining the living conditions of the minors and the next steps to protect them.
