Twenty-one dogs died a horrible death in Vavdo, Halkidiki, using poisoned bait, according to a statement from the Municipality of Polygyros. In fact, the animals, 14 adults and 7 minors, were being cared for by a local breeder.

The Municipality of Polygyros condemns the incident through the same statement, speaking of “an indescribable act of barbarity, which offends every sense of humanity and culture” and a “serious criminal offence, which is strictly prosecuted by Greek law”.

Appeal of the Municipality of Polygyros for information

“The Municipality of Polygyros will not remain indifferent to such criminal actions,” said the mayor of Polygyros, George Emmanuel, while, as it became known after the incident, the Municipality will proceed to file a lawsuit against unknown persons, will fully cooperate with the competent police authorities to identify those responsible, will collect data and testimonies from the wider area, and will proceed to inform citizens about the danger of poisoned baits, both for animals and for public health, but also to strengthen the protection and management of stray animals.

Among other things, the announcement of the Municipality of Polygyros said, “The Municipality, in cooperation with the Five-Member Committee for the Management of Stray Animals and local animal welfare associations, had already taken repeated actions to manage this particular animal population, providing support through sterilizations and free medical care. Despite the difficulties and sometimes limited possibilities for cooperation, municipal services and volunteers have continued unremitting efforts to improve conditions and promote adoptions.”

Finally, citizens with any information related to the incident are asked to contact the relevant authorities immediately, helping to solve the case.
