The complex training exercise for air rescue in the valley of Tempe, organized by the Aegean Motorway in cooperation with EMAK, took place last Thursday 23 April with success and a high degree of operational readiness.
The training exercise took place during the planned two-day blockade of the area for the semi-annual inspection and maintenance of the rock protection systems, giving the opportunity for a realistic simulation in real field conditions.
The scenario provided for a challenging incident: the injury of an aerialist on a steep rocky slope at an altitude of approximately 70 meters above the level of the Old Highway.

Operation Rescue: The mobilization was immediate and included the following stages:
* Providing first aid: The aircrew partner of the injured person safely approached the scene and provided first aid using the aircrew’s portable equipment.
*Coordination: the on-site technician in charge, the Motorway Management Centre (MCC) and the 8th EMAC were immediately informed.
* EMAK intervention: the 8th EMAK team, under the guidance of the technical staff and making use of the access maps, approached the site via a marked path for the safe transport of the injured person.
* Field Support: The remaining aircrew assisted in the preparation of the rescue and in guiding the rescue forces to the rough spot.
The exercise involved the participation of Aegean Motorway officials, specialized aerial teams, the 8th Special Disaster Response Unit (E.M.M.A.K.), as well as specialized geologists-aircraft operators of the Swiss GEOTEST AG.

This action is part of the Aegean Motorway’s continuous training programme. Such trainings strengthen coordination between the cooperating agencies and ensure that, even in the most difficult conditions, the protection of workers and users of the motorway remains a non-negotiable priority.
