Minister of Environment and Energy Stavros Papastavrou is in Brussels, along with his Deputy Minister, Nikos Tsafos, to attend the Council of EU Energy Ministers, which will take place today, Monday 16 March.
EU Energy Ministers including Stavros Papastavrou will speak in Brussels on European networks and energy infrastructure, on the basis of the Commission’s proposals presented on 10 December 2025. The European Commission’s proposals for the European Grids Package have a strong “Greek colour”.
According to the Ministry of Environment and Energy, they are a vindication of the policy of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who brought the issue of grids to the European table and the result of a systematic strategy of the leadership of the Ministry of Environment and Energy.
In the midst of the crisis in the Middle East, the uncertainty it causes and the international rise in energy prices, the aim is to highlight the weaknesses of the European energy market, to address the challenges and to find solutions at a pan-European level.
The aim is to improve cross-border interconnectivity, enhance electrification and speed up the licensing of networks, while at the same time increasing the resilience and security of cross-border infrastructure.
Also, the Council is to examine progress made on the European action plan on affordable energy, presented by the European Commission a year ago, aimed at reducing energy costs. This plan takes on particular importance in the light of developments in Iran.
Finally, over lunch, the Ministers will meet with ACER’s interim director, Volker Zuleger, and the Director General of the EIB’s Projects Directorate, Laura Piovesan, to discuss ways to accelerate investment in clean energy for European competitiveness.
