A new health order for the operation of canteens in all schools across the country is being implemented by the Ministry of Health.
The new provision, which replaces the previous 2013 framework, was formulated taking into account the recommendation of the National Nutrition Commission based on the latest scientific evidence and applies to school canteens, cafeterias and vending machines.
The goal is for the 2026-2027 school year to start with full compliance of the relevant bodies with the new rules, ensuring that the school environment will function as a model for healthy eating and shielding the health of students.
Strict quality criteria for products in canteens
In this context, strict quality criteria are established for the products that are allowed to be available within school facilities. Among the key changes are a complete ban on cold cuts, a mandatory reduction in portions of certain items, and an absolute ban on the provision of soft drinks.
This initiative belongs to Deputy Minister of Health Irene Agapidaki and is part of the broader framework of actions of the National Programme for Combating Childhood Obesity.
Irini Agapidaki: We are radically changing the rules
“Tackling childhood obesity is not a theoretical battle, but a daily act of responsibility that starts where our children spend most of their day: at school. With the new health order, we are radically changing the rules of the game. We are updating the framework based on the most rigorous scientific data, we are permanently removing cold cuts and soft drinks from school canteens and reducing portions, creating an environment that actively protects students,” said Deputy Minister of Health Irene Agapidaki, adding:
“This initiative is a central pillar of our national actions against childhood obesity. We are starting from the root of the problem, shielding our children and providing them with the tools to adopt healthy eating habits that will accompany them throughout their lives. We are not discounting the health of the younger generation. The relevant authorities must take the necessary steps immediately to ensure that the new school year finds our schools fully compliant with the new, healthy standards.”
